How it works

Cut. Connect. Create

1. Cut shapes from chicken wire using the template. Cutters are supplied in kits and all kits come with a beginners highlighted template.

2. Connect the pieces with simple pliers, which are also supplied with the kits.

3. Create . A connected piece can then be shaped and finessed to create the finished sculpture that you can display, give as a gift or use as a base for additional materials.

For home makers & families, Sculpture Kits are available. If you have a bit of chickenwire and for makers who want more choice, downloadable templates & a subscription option are available (this is also good for those outside the UK as, although available, delivery costs for kits can be high).

Sculpture kits

The sculpture kit provides everything you need in one pack and is for for adults and for children from ages of 8 and above (some parental help might be required).

Each kit provides 2 sheets of wire, approx 500mm x 500mm, plenty for the project. Cutters and pliers are also included.

Each kit provides a highlighted beginners template as well as a template for the main sculpture. Sep by step instructions are provided for both pieces.

Subscription service & Downloadable templates

For those outside the uk and for whom the delivery cost of the kits would be high, individual templates are available for download.

To have access to a full library of dozens of templates, video tutorials and ongoing designs, a subscription service available for schools or individual crafters and artists is available.

All that is required are a pair of small wire cutters and a small pair of pliers. The templates will work with any size of chickenwire.

School workshops

ChickenWired school workshops have proved to be very popular as they provide a challenging and practical workshop. Hands-on sessions for Year 3 and beyond test dexterity and motor skills as well as concentration, perseverance and resilience. Pupils make their own recognisable sculptures and gallery of real pupil work can be seen here (scroll down to pupils work).

Truth be told, I am a bit of a wire purist, but the wire frame can be just the start of the artistic journey and below are a few possibilities to go beyond ChickenWired.

Tissue paper

Often used in the school workshops, tissue paper can be used to decorate sculptures adding colour and creating a vibrant solid sculpture.

Wet strength paper

Stronger tissue paper can be used to cover sculptures, especially larger version sculptures and then painted with mod podge to glue, seal and finish a piece.

Mod Roc

Wrapping the pieces with Mod Roc allows for a solid strong sculpture to be created, which, once dry, can be painted to create a final piece.

Moss covering

Sculptures can be filled with moss to create a living sculpture suitable for outside use. This opens the door to lots of possibilities and this style has been named as TopiART.

About the artist

I started sculpting when I was 17 and have my Father to thank as he asked me to help him in the garden. Whilst he put up anew wire fence, I took the old wire down. From this wire I built a dragon. That was nearly 40 years ago and I have worked with wire since and from this work and the workshops held in schools over the last 15 years, the ChickenWired sculpture craft was created.

I find it an almost thearputic and relaxing craft and I am very proud to be able to pass my craft to young artists and welcome any opportunity to take the craft to a wider audience.
